But Indonesia is booming, thanks at least in part to homegrown digital retailers like Tokopedia, Bukalapak, and Blibli. The relatively high cost of mobile bandwidth in Canada has dragged mobile usage for data-intensive activities like shopping. Digital buying is still riding the pandemic boost.

I think it's worth mentioning that another big winner from the Olympics has been TikTok. So TikTok says that it had 1.3 million posts about the Paris Olympics, which is a 1,800% rise compared to Tokyo. Some of that is the kind of surge in popularity of the platform itself, of course, but also, its ad revenue surged by 25% in the week following the opening ceremony alone.

Although food inflation is also driving up grocery ecommerce sales in the UK, the number of people buying groceries online will fall 2.9% to 29.5 million in 2023 as older shoppers return to stores. That means grocery will lose share of digital buyers, although at 61.1% it remains much higher in the UK than in France or Germany. What are the implications?
