It's not like, oh, I hate music now, like I'm fine just not listening to it. They could probably charge 30, $40 and I'd be like, sure. Especially because the alternatives, it's interesting because the content is pretty much the same or identical across different music streaming platforms unlike video streaming platforms. However, there aren't a lot of them.

John Porter at The Verge noting Spotify's increase isn't unexpected considering every other major music streaming service has announced a price increase in recent months. Going through them, Apple was first, last October. Amazon in January. TIDAL and YouTube Music Premium announced hikes in July and they all increased their services by a buck for its standard individual monthly subscription.

Listening to music, podcasts, and other audio is the top function of smart speakers. This year’s forecasted 86 million US monthly users are expected to approach the 100 million mark by 2027. Spoken questions or making requests is a close second. Across the range of activities in our forecast, growth rates will mirror that of the overall smart speaker user base.

This has already been the case for books, music, and video, but it won’t be the only ecommerce-majority category for long. Computer and consumer electronics will cross 50% in 2024 and continue to shift in the coming years, as will toys and hobby in 2025 and furniture and home furnishings in 2027. Toys and hobby will see the most significant shift.
