Music streaming minutes are still growing but at a slower pace this year. It gained just 2 minutes to reach 1:58 daily in H1 2023. Still, music streaming is up 29.7% from four years ago. The penetration rate for music/audio was 80.5% of internet users. Podcast listening time dropped by 4 minutes YoY to 54 minutes daily. But it is up from 48 minutes in 2020 (the first year tracked by GWI).

The new feature allows advertisers to create AI-generated audio ads for use on Amazon Music and Alexa-enabled devices. The ads work best for brands already selling on Amazon. Advertisers can link the Audio Generator to their product listing and it will create a 30-second audio spot based on the product’s description. It beats Latin America—the reigning leader in music streaming, social/messaging, and mobile—by 2 minutes. The popularity is partially motivated by the fact that podcasts consume less data (once downloaded) for lengthy content. Social/messaging time spent dropped below 3 hours for the first time since GWI began tracking it in 2019.
