Twitter Hemorrhages Users. Twitter will experience an exodus of users, as Elon Musk makes fundamental changes to the platform. Its worldwide monthly total will drop nearly 4% in 2023 and another 5% in 2024. There is little to indicate Twitter will be able to reverse this slide. This is the first time we have predicted a drop in worldwide Twitter users since we began tracking the company in 2008.

It could easily rival Twitter. Instagram will have nearly four times as many monthly users worldwide as Twitter will this year; Meta would need to convert only a small share of them to start contesting Twitter. Bluesky is a platform to watch. It’s a decentralized version of Twitter.

At least three such alliances were forged in 2023, with X (formerly Twitter) using Google Ad Manager to extend its reach, and both Pinterest and Snapchat striking deals with Amazon Ads to boost their ad businesses. Prediction. Reddit will follow in its competitors’ footsteps by aligning with a larger walled garden in 2024.

Gen Z Twitter users are slow to leave the platform. Paradoxically, the socially conscious generation will be the slowest to leave Twitter despite its problematic leadership, with Gen Z seeing a 2.4% drop in users next year compared with decreases of more than 9% among other generations.

Reddit will have more US monthly users than Twitter in 2024. In our previous forecast, completed prior to the acquisition, we expected Twitter to have 5.3 million more users than Reddit in 2024. Reddit is no stranger to content-moderation concerns, but unlike Musk-era Twitter, it’s taking steps to mitigate them as it works to attract both users and advertisers.

Musk envisioned a super app when he conceived PayPal 25 years ago, and his efforts to turn X (formerly known as Twitter) into a payment platform appear to be reviving this idea. TikTok Shop could be a gamechanger. Launched in September 2023 in the US, TikTok Shop hopes to bring Asian-style social shopping to its huge Gen Z audience.
