I think that this is somewhat sustainable because you could get a little bit deeper with all these different categories. And as Zach pointed out, Amazon has a lot more categories than people give them credit for in part because they're so heavily weighted towards a few categories, but they obviously have the ability to follow this strategy for a while.

This is sort of like when brands talk about sustainability, which is at least 90% of the time greenwashing. It kind of reminds me of when Nancy Reagan tried to confront the drug crisis in the 1980s by saying just say, no, it's not going to work. So nice try brands. I get what you're doing. But in a couple of months, this is all going to be totally forgotten. Marcus Johnson (16:26):.

At that point, if the awareness is created on social media, you're way more likely to purchase the product elsewhere, not in the environment where you may not have a credit card already on file. Because I think that even before the steep discount, their subscription prices were probably not sustainable to drive revenues. It's a bandaid over a gaping wound. Marcus Johnson:. That number again, NBCUniversal expecting Peacock to lose $3 billion this year, and they've just cut the price from five bucks to a buck 50.

I think all of the social platforms, TikTok included, are looking for more sustainable ways to help creators monetize, right? Creator funds have been criticized really heavily in the media. Creators have not received large payouts from that, and this is one of the ways that TikTok is trying to incentivize creators to create more content for the platform.

I guess we can say that Disney pretty much acquitted itself in this past quarter, but we really won't know how sustainable their position is until we see at least another couple of quarters of data. Marcus Johnson:. Not great that they were struggling in India in large part because India is just such a huge country.

They actually have about half as many stores as Walmart, which is astounding, but I think they're also growing at a pace that doesn't seem sustainable and they don't just have to go up against Walmart. Yes, they're a grocer, but now you've got grocery delivery and you have Amazon getting bigger or getting more involved in that market.

It didn't sound at all like something fun or attractive or the kind of thing that would really draw in users at scale or would be sustainable because even they admitted that it wasn't necessarily a moneymaking proposition. They even wanted it to be a nonprofit or government sponsored.

But to Ethan's point, it does look like the path toward real sustainability is by going global and it's not clear that Peacock has a strong angle to achieve success on a global scale. So to be continued. Marcus Johnson:. It's putting itself out there more.

I mean, I think in the go-go days of e-commerce, a lot of companies went really deep on free shipping, free returns, just a lot of perks that are less sustainable now that there's so much more competition and people are returning to stores.

That's when brands do something that they say is sustainable, but it's really just a marketing campaign. Rainbow washing is sort of the same concept, but for LGBTQ themes. So you are releasing a line of Pride shirts that say like Yas Queen on them, and then only doing that in June and not donating any money or having any sort of inclusive hiring practices or anything of the sort.
