For example, Prohaska consultant for data and identity strategy Rob Cantave envisions the use of machine learning (ML) in a chatbot to 鈥渞ecognize鈥� customers based on their cadence and word choice. It鈥檚 hard to find a marketer, agency, publisher, or ad tech vendor who isn鈥檛 trumpeting the disruptive effect of generative AI (genAI) on the industry.

The new AI models are based on the large language model (LLM) Tongyi Qianwen, and support extensive data training and underlying chatbot applications similar to OpenAI鈥檚 ChatGPT and Google鈥檚 Bard. The latest in China鈥檚 AI race: Alibaba鈥檚 AI push comes on the heels of competing releases from Tencent and Baidu, just as Beijing formalizes AI regulation.

So a lot of these companies are happening to go bit by bit, whether for a text generation, for a chatbot, for music generation to find a big enough database to train a model. And a lot of companies aren't being able to find that and they're taking routes they shouldn't and getting their hands slapped legally. I think that's one of the tough parts here.

By January, ChatGPT reached 100 million monthly active users, and by February, Google announced it had begun testing its own generative AI chatbot, Bard. Since then, brands and retailers have been scrambling to incorporate generative AI into their operations.

The company鈥檚 AI assistant aims to simplify sales and marketing processes and boost efficiency.

I think that the five models or five steps that OpenAI has laid out, chatbots, reasoners, agents, innovators, organizations. It can read as the steps to AGI, it also can read as the roadmap to developing AI that can completely replace a human worker. That last step is an organizer, is AI that can do the work and tasks of an entire organization.

Finally, some rules: Generative AI has been perhaps the most buzzy AI technology outside of chatbots in recent months. But while consumers tend to use it as a toy, legal ambiguity around how generative AI is trained have landed companies in trouble and stifled corporate use. While it may be fun to speculate what 鈥淪tar Wars鈥� would look like if it was directed by Wes Anderson, it鈥檚 not so simple.

For one thing, Google is still the default search engine across major browsers and mobile devices and going to a chat bot or even another search engine for answers just adds friction for end users. And that's not to say non Google chatbots don't pose a threat at all, but it does mean that they only make a huge difference for a certain type of query.

But I do think the customer support improvements could be a game-changer because I've had great experiences with chatbots and I've also had experiences that made me want to put my fist through the wall. That's true for classic human-forward customer service as well.

The Washington Post recently launched a new AI-driven chatbot on its site that answers user queries about climate with answers pulled from Washington Post articles, writes Sara Fischer of Axios. The paper plans to expand the chatbot to include other topics.

But TikTok, Snapchat, and Meta all have chatbot-powered search features, and OpenAI continues to refine ChatGPT with new features. Fragmentation will lead to a wider search ad net. Fewer list-based answers will trigger new search formats.

The chatbot ChatGPT can now access up-to-date content from the internet whereas before, it could only access information from 2021 and earlier. Now, it can pull from what happens just a second ago. ChatGPT can now provide real-time answers and a link to its sources, but the concern is that users may be unlikely to click through after getting the answers they were looking for.

It has also been innovating in this space with its Rufus chatbot and Prime comes with free and importantly fast shipping on top of all the other prime benefits like access to Prime Video. I don't think Perplexity will topple Amazon by any means, but I do think Perplexity has a massive opportunity here because Amazon is notoriously an awful user experience.

Meta's AI, including its assistant chatbot, is powered by LAMA three. That's its latest and most powerful large language model. So, Cecilia Kang and Cade Metz of the New York Times know that the FTC, Federal Trade Commission, has opened an investigation into ChatGPT maker OpenAI, according to the Washington Post, over whether the chatbot has harmed consumers through its collection of data and publication of false information on individuals.
