Canada has already shown it will take aim at foreign web giants. Bill C-11, the Online Streaming Act, passed into law in April 2023, requiring foreign streaming services like Netflix and Spotify to invest in Canadian content and adhere to quotas. Both companies have criticized strict quotas, arguing they already invest in Canadian artists and productions. Meta and Google have balked at the law.

But it’s the biggest share of any UK retailer by a significant margin. It will continue gaining share in 2023 and 2024, although those gains will be incremental. Netflix has completely removed the basic membership plans for everyone, including existing members in Canada this month. According to The Verge, users in Canada and the UK began to receive prompts earlier this month stating that July the 13th was the last day that viewers on this plan could continue watching content. Over 90% of respondents reported watching live TV in H1 2023. In Canada, it's nine in 10 people in the population. This is a really, really valuable piece of advertising real estate. By the same token, CTV ad spend is beginning to slow down a little bit, so I think this is one area that could help keep it buoyant for a little while longer. I don't think it's going to be revolutionary in any way and the needle won't fly, but it will do enough.

Based on our penetration figures, sub OTT appears to be entirely mainstream in China, the US, the UK, Canada, and Australia. Meanwhile, in countries as disparate as Italy, India, and Argentina, barely more than a third of the online population is using the medium. And in Japan, Indonesia, and South Korea, sub OTT seems almost rare.

Best Buy announced it would open 167 small-format Best Buy Express stores across Canada. While there’s no word on a US expansion, it would make sense for Best Buy to bring the format to college campuses first. Best Buy opened its first small-format store in North Carolina in 2022, featuring a curated selection of products, Geek Squad services, and scan-and-go checkout capability.
