I think a lot of people scratched their heads when Netflix announced it and have sort of continued scratching their heads ever since, even though it seems like Netflix is making an earnest attempt to sort of build its brand and its library of games. And so I found some data from Apptopia that was shared with a mobile games website about a month ago.

So when you look at the total number of viewers, you see folks like Netflix, Prime, Hulu, and Disney at the top of the list. But then when you flip that and look at percentage change in growth, that tells a totally different story. YouTube climbs to the top, Netflix and Prime and Hulu move all the way down to the bottom of that list. Netflix and Prime actually go into the negative for growth.

Netflix, when they first started doing live sports, they didn't say, "We've got a bunch of stuff planned." They started one. They trialed it to see what... saw what it was like, what kind of returns they got, and then added another and another. But there's a chance this works. Partly because public of opinion of cable news is so low, so maybe there's a bit of a news vacuum.

Even though Spotify is growing now, you have to imagine that if they just keep doing the same thing, the runway is going to start to run dry a little bit, and I'm sure Spotify does not want to find itself in a position that Netflix was in, in Spring 2022. You have YouTube beating out Netflix in terms of watch time, and all of these things have served to really make marketers realize that this is a space that we need to be working in. I will say though that not every CMO, not every brand is rushing towards creators and influencers with open arms. There's still quite a bit of hesitancy.

Netflix includes mobile games as part of their subscription plans and is working on CTV versions. Apple Arcade, Google Play Pass, and Xbox Live are among several subscription services that limit most advertising options. As with premium games, there may eventually be ways to include more ads in these games. Free-to-play games on consoles are an opportunity for ads.

And then with Amazon really surpassing Netflix, that was another big one of mine. Amazon's been spending a lot of money on content, a lot of money on that Lord of the Rings show that people don't like to watch. And I'm shocked that it's really surpassed up Netflix. Marcus Johnson:. Good answer, but you ran long. Negative two for Zach. Zach Goldner:. That's a shame. Marcus Johnson:. Bill, you're up.

This is to be expected given that sub OTT streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+ still mainly rely on subscriber fees and are only cautiously opening up to advertising. Among media that is entirely ad-reliant, radio is by far the worst off in terms of its relationship between time spent and ad revenues. Within digital audio, podcasts face the same discrepancy.
