Among the countries we break out, only South Korea exceeds the US in both penetration metrics. South Korea, the US, and Canada will be the top three countries for digital gaming among the population overall, with Brazil a close fourth. Among internet users, South Korea will also take the top spot, followed by India, the US, and Mexico.

China and South Korea have often foretold mobile trends in the US, and their current buzz is around foldable smartphones. Together, the two countries accounted for 42% of foldable smartphones sales in 2022, according to CounterPoint Technology Market Research. The numbers aren’t huge—5.3 million units in 2023 in China—but YoY growth is a robust 58%.

Podcast listener growth will be relatively high in China, Japan, and South Korea, mainly because penetration remains low. Local content creation is still in its emerging stages, although China has homegrown providers that have rapidly scaled up. All three markets represent a significant opportunity, given that podcast awareness remains low.

South Korea followed soon after in 2015. South Korea held the third-highest penetration of ecommerce in the world up until 2022, when it was surpassed by Indonesia. The US took far longer to reach the milestone in 2019. The pandemic ushered many countries into the 10%+ club— Indonesia was the fastest market to take off. 11 countries shot past the threshold during the pandemic.
