  • Spotify and YouTube are their preferred platforms for podcasts. Forty percent of adult Gen Zers said Spotify was their go-to platform for podcasts, while 32% cited YouTube, according to an October 2022 Morning Consult poll. Apple Podcasts, iHeartRadio, and Amazon Music were all cited by 6%. If they listen to a podcast, they’re probably bingeing it.

The format lost 9 minutes YoY, falling to 43 minutes in H1 2023. Despite this drop, the longer trajectory shows significant growth in listening time as demand for this digital form of talk radio has increased.

While that was seen as an asset for Spotify at the time, the company has had a challenging year, cutting jobs and canceling podcasts. Spotify’s US ad revenues grew by 15.1% this year to pass the $1 billion mark, according to our forecast.

Reddit will end up with the third-fastest ad revenue growth globally, a well-timed result in a possible IPO year. Spotify will perform well as it tries to right the ship after mishandling various podcast investments.

While the music move caused some consternation, on the podcast side Amazon took a less controversial approach, making more shows available to Prime members ad free.
