Quick history, to protect people's privacy, Europe's highest court this past summer barred Meta from combining data collected about users across its platforms, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and outside site snaps unless it received explicit consent from users. The ad-free tiers will cost about $11 a month on the web, 14 on mobile devices.

Snap moved first with My AI, but Discord has Clyde, TikTok has Tako, and Meta has plans for bots in Instagram and WhatsApp. These bots could change the way users find content and, by extension, what advertising they鈥檒l see. But it鈥檚 unclear yet whether these chatbots will be popular in the long run, as the early backlash to My AI and Discord has shown. What does this mean for marketers?

Updates released in March 2023 include optimization for WhatsApp conversions, 鈥淐lick to Messenger鈥� integration, and measurement tools to compare how Reels ads perform versus other types of ads in terms of the post engagement objective. When it comes to driving sales, brands and retailers put Instagram first among social platforms.

Meanwhile, Meta鈥檚 US monthly user base (excluding WhatsApp, Messenger, and Oculus/Reality Labs) will continue to grow in 2023. The catch is that Instagram now accounts for all that growth. In good news, Gen Z isn鈥檛 (entirely) giving up on Instagram yet. For older Gen Zers, Instagram has become what Facebook is to millennials: Necessary, even if frustratingly so.

So this is the number that encapsulates all of the different platforms under the Meta brands, whether that's WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, et cetera. And the family of apps number, they added a South Korea's worth of new family daily active people number, 50 million daily active people is what they call them, 50 million they added.

I've noticed many more texts even on WhatsApp from brands and companies trying to reach me. So the reality is email boxes are littered with trash and this is a very, very good opportunity for brands. It's a more expensive way to reach consumers, but it's something that they should lean more into.

Meta posted Q1 earnings that beat estimates on Wednesday, but its shares slumped on disappointing Q2 guidance as it outlined plans for heavy AI investments.

I think they're calling them AI agents on Instagram, on Messenger, and on WhatsApp as well. So there's certainly a lot of momentum around it. Right now I'd say there this shiny new toy for social users, but they can also provide real value for advertisers as well.

So one app that I use a lot to keep up with people in Finland and in the rest of Europe actually is WhatsApp, which is not one that we would necessarily think of first as social media. It's more of a messaging app. But it's what I use really to text with all of my friends in Finland. Otherwise, they're mostly the same. Instagram, Facebook, a lot of Facebook actually.

I could use WhatsApp at the same time as watching that. You could have Google Shopping on one half of the screen and Amazon open on another to compare prices. Maybe you're pulling up stats at the same time as doing some kind of sports betting, using some kind of sports betting app perhaps. So there are some use cases there. All right, let's move to Peter.

A lot of other properties to get back to their core competencies, a lot of focus on the Metaverse and then a lot of panic when people thought that they weren't focusing on things like developing the ad products of Instagram and also trying to monetize WhatsApp. And so maybe more of a recommitment to what it was doing and less of a focus on future applications.
