The move mimics TikTok鈥檚 Chinese counterpart, Douyin, where advertisers have long been able to use search ads to drive traffic or spur app downloads. TikTok鈥檚 careers page gives another sign of the company鈥檚 ambitions: It currently lists multiple job openings tied to search advertising. Reddit is testing keyword targeting.

A ban on TikTok would result in less anger and retaliation from China. They don't have much of a leg to stand on in terms of bans, given that they have long since banned every Western social media app inside China, and really every internet company inside China from the US has long since been banned. But a forced sale, that's tough.

While Twitch鈥檚 user base and user experience are distinct from the likes of TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat, its foray into social video shows it's vying for increased engagement and monetization and potentially social commerce. Subscription bundling is a growing part of Amazon鈥檚 business.

And TikTok is just an absolutely wonderful creative engine, not to mention all the things that TikTok's doing in social commerce, which I know we haven't talked about. So I do think there are some underlying things that need to get resolved.

Then it's an interesting question of, "This is a whole lot of transactional data that is with a Chinese company. Does that not matter rather than just watching me open up people's makeup halls on TikTok?" All of this should, in theory, matter.

So the tiny history is Congress very quickly passed a law to ban TikTok saying, because US government's nervous about all that data being collected by a company that's owned by a Chinese company, and the Chinese government getting hold of the said data.

China is one of those countries where the population is about to start falling. So China's population is 1.4 billion. I think this year they're getting overtaken by India, so India will be the country with the most people. China will come in second, but it's very, very close, about 1.4 billion each.
