The US does $2.18 trillion in cross-border trade (both imports and exports) with its top three biggest partners—Mexico, Canada, and China—according to the US Census Bureau.

The value of the Canadian dollar is also at near-historical lows, suppressing cross-border demand. For Canadian brands and retailers, this will result in greater domestic demand. Why this matters: Payment players, financial institutions, crypto projects, and retailers have been eyeing stablecoins to speed up transaction rates, lower fees, and simplify cross-border transactions. Cross-border commerce. UK cross-border ecommerce is recovering after Brexit disruption. The number of UK cross-border ecommerce buyers is forecast to reach 21.9 million in 2025, representing 40.5% of all UK digital buyers, per our December 2024 forecast.

It’s China’s cross-border players, however, that are the ones making the biggest mark on ecommerce in the region today. Platforms like Shein and Temu are thriving due to wide product ranges and competitive pricing. Cross-border players rank at the top of mobile app download lists.

With over 100 local retail media networks operating in Europe, fragmentation remains a challenge, particularly for cross-border campaigns. New predictions: Bold moves in response to tariffs. Looking ahead, the analysts offered three predictions for the rest of 2025 and beyond:. 1. Walmart will launch a new online fashion marketplace to capitalize on the challenges facing Temu and Shein.

Why it matters: Some Americans already cross the Canadian border—physically and via online Rx—for cheaper prescription drugs, but the Trump administration wants to formalize cross-border deals. President Trump’s prescription drug executive order in April re-ups a provision from his first administration to encourage the FDA to allow states to import lower-cost drugs from Canada.

With an institutional stablecoin—which holds a one-to-one exchange ratio with the dollar—banks can speed up transactions, especially for cross-border payments.
